Marc and Greg Polmans have been playing tennis together since they were youngsters, growing up practicing, living, and breathing the sport.
Both joined Kooyong at a young age on scholarships and have been representing the Club in Pennant and Premier League for many years and have now been teaming up in another manner.
Being a tennis coach of a professional Australian player on the tour is probably the toughest coaching role because of the amount of travelling and time it demands.
“We can’t just go home for a week or so every 2 months to rest up, for example, I am away from Australia for 7-8 months straight on this current tour,” Marc Polmans says.
As a player finding someone compatible to travel with you week in week out, experiencing the ups and downs, sharing rooms, practices, being in each other’s pockets near 24/7 it’s not an easy thing to find the right person.
“I was looking for a coach/travelling buddy/ hitting partner all in one and it is not easy to find someone who can offer this level of commitment that I need.”
“In August 2022, Greg decided he wanted to be a tennis coach and did his coaching course and some coaching work locally and then as a family it came up in discussion that maybe Greg should be this person.”
With younger brother Greg stepping up into the role of full-time travelling coach of Marc, who was coming back from injury after six months off, he has helped guide his older brother from mid 800s to 165 in the World rankings.
“Our combination is working really well and improving all the time and I am very excited to see where this goes."
With the brothers working beautifully together they will keep working hard on tour to get Marc to achieve his next goal of reaching the World’s top 100.
